It’s no secret: Diet and exercise are an effective weight loss combination. But as with many important things in life, it’s a lot easier said than done. The difficulty in maintaining both a strict diet and exercise regimen is particularly difficult in an age when our lifestyles provide more distractions and demand more commitments than ever before.
One common comment that we hear from our clients is their desire to lose the belly fat they’ve accumulated over the years. Many of them point to the fact that proportionately, they are fine, that is, they do not show excessive weight except in the area around their stomach.

In an online story from Self magazine, Lucy Danziger offers “4 Mistakes Everyone Makes When Fighting Ab Flab.” We think there is some good advice here that we’d like to share.

Danziger’s first recommendation is to spend less time in front of the TV. We’d like to add that sitting in front a computer is just about as bad, but either way, the need to move more is apparent. Danziger cites research from the University of Oulu in Finland which showed that …” people who tuned in for two or more hours daily had weaker ab and back muscles (by up to 10 percent) than those who viewed less than two hours, regardless of their overall activity level.” Danziger also recommends that you if you must watch TV, you should coordinate your schedule with your workout, however, there are varying opinions of the effectiveness of, for example, watching TV while on your treadmill.

Getting stressed is another belly booster. Danziger writes that “Increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol, a result of chronic worry, lead to excess stomach fat, research shows.” That’s good enough for us, but how do we reduce our stress? One way is to try breathing control, inhaling slowly through the nose, and exhaling slowly through the mouth. Perhaps more important is acquiring a new perspective: Most of what stresses you out is not as important as you think it is.

Next, back away from bread unless it is whole grain. “Dieters who did so lost more stomach fat than those who merely cut calories and ate refined grains, a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals,” writes Danziger.

And if you didn’t already know it, stop eating about two hours before you go to bed.

Sometimes, diet, exercise, and small adjustments are not enough. When that happens, it’s time to call SOBOBA Medical Weight Loss Group for the support you need to lose the weight you want.
